Fundamentals Exams Now Computer-Based Fundamentals Exams Now Computer-Based Fundamentals Exams Now Computer-BasedIn a change that should make taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examinations a much easier process, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying is now offering the exams at approved Pearson VUE computer-based testing centers. Previously, the tests were only offered two times a year in the traditional pencil-and-paper format.Computer-based testing provides many advantages for both examinees and NCEES, the council said. Test takers can now schedule their exam at a time and location that is convenient for them and receive their results within 7 to 10 days. In addition, the move to computer-based testing ensures enhanced security and better uniformity in testing conditions, according to NCEES. The History and Meaning of the 1949 Geneva Conventions The History and Meaning of the 1949 Geneva Conventions The Geneva Conventions are an international agreement, a series of treaties that the military of numerous countries must abide by in times of war. They were first implemented by the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became the International Committee for the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The Geneva Conventions  were intended to protect soldiers who were no longer engaged in combat. This included the sick and wounded, shipwrecked members of armed forces at sea and prisoners of war, and certain auxiliary civilians. What Is the Geneva Convention?   Held in Geneva, the 1949 conventions and two protocols added in 1977 form the basis for international humanitarian law in times of war. The provisions of two subsequent Geneva Conventions in 1951 and 1967 protect refugees.   The 1949 Geneva Conventions followed three others that took place in 1864, 1906, and 1929. The 1949 Conventions updated the tenets, rules, and agreements reached in the first three conventions.   There were actually four Conventions in 1949, and the first provided the fourth update to the original version of the agreement. It extended protections to not only the sick and wounded but to clergy and medical personnel as well.   The second 1949 Geneva Convention offered protection to military personnel serving at sea during wartime, including those confined on hospital ships. It adapted provisions achieved in the Hague Convention of 1906. The third 1949 Convention applied to prisoners of war and replaced 1929s Prisoners of War Convention. Most notably, it set terms for the locations of places of captivity and standards that must be maintained there.   The fourth Convention further extended protection to civilians, including those in occupied territories. In total, 196 states parties or countries have signed and ratified the 1949 Conventions over the years, including many that did not participate or sign until decades later. These include Angola, Bangladesh, and Iran.   Changes to the Geneva Conventions While the treaties put in place by the Geneva Conventions are still in effect today, some discussion has taken place in recent years about updating them again. The most daunting question is whether the humanitarian rights put into effect by the Geneva Conventions for prisoners of war should pertain to terrorists or suspected terrorists.   World leaders have questioned whether these rules, written after World War II and updated after the Vietnam War, apply to the conflicts of today, particularly after the events of September 11, 2001. If so, how can they be enforced more effectively? Should they be revised to address new threats, such as acts of terrorism? The case of Hamdi v. Rumsfeld threw a spotlight on this issue in 2004 when Hamdi, a U.S. citizen, was accused of joining Taliban forces on U.S. soil. As such, this made him an enemy combatant and, the Department of Defense argued, placed him outside the protections of the Geneva Conventions. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled otherwise, basing its decision on a congressional resolution that had been in effect since 2001 allowing the president to use all necessary and appropriate forces against any country that participated in the 9/11 attacks.   Furthermore, the Conventions obligate all states parties to the agreement- including Afghanistan- to offer universal jurisdiction and support of its protections. They must enforce them on their own soil. It remains to be seen whether further updates will be reached.

As it turns out, only 5% of all people said they’d lied on their resumes â€" but Millennials do it twice as much as anyone else. When it came to employment dates, women lied far more than men â€" 41% to 19%, respectively.All jokes aside, history is littered with many big shots whose fall from grace was that they lied on their resumes  â€" some of them for decades, and over basic details â€" costing them their jobs. Ex-Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson, who said he had a computer science and accounting degree, lost his job when it came to light that he only had the accounting degree. No one cares that he “only” had an accounting degree, just that he lied.In 2014, Wal-Mart’s top spokesman was forced to resign over an old lie on his resume that said he had a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware when he actually hadn’t finished enough coursework to graduate. This lie was discovered during a background check while he was up for a promotion.Marilee Jones, the dean of admissions at MIT from 1997 to 2007, told one heck of a whopper for 28 years: she stated she had three degrees when in fact, she had zero. She was found out through an anonymous tip and had to leave as a result.And even more embarrassingly, celebrity chef Robert Irvine lied about designing Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding cake. In many of the roles I’ve had at Amazon and certainly at Vimeo, I’ve been in situations where it wasn’t like I had the playbook and I knew exactly what to do.“I think that when you are pushed outside of your comfort zone, you get off that learning curve so much faster and you develop as a leader so much faster.”X Prize Foundation founder Peter Diamandis learned the importance of focusing his attentionDiamandis is one of those people with a nearly limitless drive to work toward his goals - and so a challenge for him, when he was younger, was not knowing how to focus that energy.His parents wanted him to become a doctor, but he wanted to study space. His compromise? Getting his master’s in aerospace science from MIT and his MD from Harvard. But even as a medical student, he was involved in space organizations on the side. His balancing act was too much, even for someone who never stoppe d. His dean called him into his office one day.“And my dean was like, ‘Peter, what are you doing? You’re a bright kid. Your interns are telling me you’re not paying attention, you’re not focusing. Do you want to graduate?'” Diamandis told us. “I’m breaking down in tears right now, and I’m saying, ‘Yes, I want to graduate. I promised my parents I would graduate.’ And I fessed up on everything that was going on with ISU and my launch company, International MicroSpace.“And I said, ‘We’re doing engine development tasks and all of this.’ And he goes, ‘OK, all right, here’s the deal: If you pass part two of the boards, and you promise never to practice medicine, I’ll let you graduate.’ So he kept his end of the bargain, and I kept mine!“It was a turning point in my life, because I was able to be done with that obligation.”Retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly learned that performing at a high level is built on a foundation of constant effortKelly and his identical twin brother Mark - also a retired astronaut - were different in one key way as kids. Kelly simply did not care about school.He was able to get enough work done that he made it to the State University of New York Maritime College. By that point, he had decided that he wanted to become an astronaut, inspired to do so after reading Tim Wolfe’s book about the subject, “The Right Stuff.”He decided that if he would one day achieve that goal, he would have to excel at school to have even a remote shot at accomplishing it. Determined, he devoted hours every day to studying, and, unsurprisingly, his poor grades began to rise. But his attention began to wander again. As he writes in his memoir “Endurance,” there was one weekend where he was ready to head out to a big party at Rutgers when he had a phone call with his brother.When he mentioned that he had his first calculus exam in a few days but was going to party first, Mark snapped at him for losing track of his goal. “Are you out of your goddamn mind?” he remembered Mark telling him. “You’re in school. You need to absolutely ace this exam, and everything else, if you want to get caught up.”Kelly decided to take his brother’s advice, and things, of course, worked out. But he remembers it as a moment where his discipline could have been shaken forever.Media mogul Tina Brown learned that taking care of your team is the way to foster your own successAs the editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, and as the founding editor of the Daily Beast, Brown left an indelible mark on American media. She told us that her successes were only possible because she learned early in her career not only how to create and rely on excellent teams, but to keep them loyal.“Really nurture talent - I mean, talent’s the key to it all,” she said. “You have to handle people properly. You need to find them, but then you’ve got to keep them with you. The way you keep them with you is by being genu inely engaged with people.“I’m always shocked, frankly, at how editors really don’t pay much attention to the writers at all. Writers will write for somebody for very little money, as they did for me at the Beast, if they get a response. If they get a note back saying: ‘Fantastic piece. Can you just make the top this, and I suggest you change the middle to this?’ Boom, they love it. They want response, and they want to feel that they’ve found a home.”Edible Arrangements founder Tariq Farid learned to not engage with those who wanted to see him failFarid moved to Connecticut from Pakistan when he was 13, and his family had very little money. The combination of having a different ethnicity and economic background from other kids in the neighborhood led to some bullying - but even as he explained it to us, he said he didn’t want to overplay it, because he learned to dismiss it and focus on the neighbors that welcomed his family and supported their flower shop.It was us eful to him as an adult, when there was an online conspiracy theory about Farid sending his foundation’s money to the Islamic paramilitary group Hamas, an accusation the Anti-Defamation League publicly stated was baseless.“I’ve faced these kind of remarks and discriminatory things before,” Farid told us. “But when you measure that to the success you’ve gotten on the other side, it’s insignificant.”“If you want to focus on pessimism, if people want to focus on negativity, then you get negativity and you only stay within negativity. But if you want to focus on what you can do not only to better yourself but to better your community and to better the people around you, then you will do that.”Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes learned how to balance ambition with realityHughes helped his Harvard roommate Mark Zuckerberg develop Facebook in its early years, and it made him unexpectedly rich. In 2012, he used some of his fortune to buy the struggling magazine The New Repu blic.Hughes wanted to make the highbrow liberal journal a mainstream success, and his efforts to do so resulted in $25 million spent over four years and the loss of most of his editorial staff, in protest of his changes.When we spoke with Hughes, he explained that while he stands by some of the changes he made, he regrets that he went in “guns blazing.” He’s taken what he’s learned to his current venture, the Economic Security Project.“That’s why I didn’t start an organization to campaign for UBI right off the bat,” he said, referring to Universal Basic Income, a system in which every citizen receives a guaranteed income regardless of their circumstances. Instead, Hughes’ organization is advocating for a guaranteed income of a monthly $500 sent to working Americans making under $50,000. It is certainly quite ambitious, but one Hughes doesn’t see as impossible, and he is willing to support policies that gradually ease into it.As he wrote in his book “Fair Shot,â € his failure at the New Republic taught him that, “just because an idea is bold does not mean that the means to achieve it need be. A prosaic and incremental approach can be a more effective way to put poetic ideals into practice.”Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards learned to not second-guess herself when an intimidating opportunity aroseRichards is in her last year as the head of the women’s health organization Planned Parenthood, and she’s brought it back to its movement roots. Throughout her career, in fact, she’s never shied away from defending causes she believes in, regardless of the opposition’s power or aggression. She told us her model has always been her late mother, former Texas governor Ann Richards.“She spent a lot of years just doing what society expected her,” Richards told us. “She was just to raise kids, be a perfect wife, throw the perfect dinner party, and she did that for several years. And it wasn’t until she had the chance to bre ak out and do what she wanted to do for her - I think she was always regretful that she, you know, missed some time. You know, she let social convention get in the way.“So her best advice was, ‘This is the only life you have, so do it.’ And whatever it is, never turn down a new opportunity. And, you know, she used to say when I was worried about taking a new job - or to other women who would say, ‘You know, I’m not sure if I’m qualified’ - she said, ‘Look. What’s the worst thing that could happen?” And I think that’s really good advice when you’re thinking about starting a new business or changing jobs. It’s just, ‘what’s the worst thing that can happen,’ because usually, once you can imagine that, it’s not that bad.”Flatiron Health CEO Nat Turner learned that following a clearly defined mission brings out the best work in himself and his teamNat Turner was only 24 years old when he sold his first company for $80 million, eight years ago. It wa s a deal with Google that got him and his cofounder Zach Weinberg some capital and a management job at Google New York office in exchange for their ad platform, Invite Media. But it took all of one day for them to feel bored and unsatisfied.“And we always say, our obituary one day, when we die: We don’t want to say we optimized banner ads online,” Turner told us.Inspiration struck when Turner considered a question from his cousin, whose seven-year-old son was still fighting a battle with leukemia that he’d eventually win. Turner’s cousin couldn’t figure out why it was so difficult to find data on childhood leukemia treatments, considering that it seemed like a problem that could easily be solved by tech.Turner and Weinberg decided to create the software that would do that, and more, which led to the creation of Flatiron Health in 2012. Today the company is valued at over $2 billion, and Turner can’t imagine ever leading a company that doesn’t have a purpose beyond ma king money.Turner explained that the company’s mission isn’t just pushing him and Weinberg to work harder. “Everything’s easier,” he said. But, once they are ‘on stage,’ they filter their emotions and feelings.That’s a huge paradox. Not only because being vulnerable sets the right example, but also because people already know what their leaders try to hide.Our society idealizes leaders; we’ve turned into superheroes. It’s natural to think we must perform to fill those expectations?- ?everyone feels forced to be flawless, not human.People already know your flaws and weaknesses?- ?they see more than you think. There’s no point in hiding who you are. Own it!There are two types of self-awareness, according to organizational psychol ogist Tasha Eurich: Internal and External. Internal self-awareness means we can clearly see our own values, passions, thoughts, feelings, and emotions. External self-awareness is clearly seeing how others see us.“Self-awareness isn’t one truth. HR professionals, hiring managers and the ATS all scan this section to quickly determine whether you have the background of a candidate who fits the job description. Get this section right, and you will get past the gatekeepers and win the opportunity to make your case in person. The first test for making sure your resume makes the cut is by creating alignment between the skills listed on your resume and those required by the job description. Be sure that the alignment is not in spirit alone. Use the employer's language and pay attention to the choice of words so that you can mirror them on your resume. This step is simple if you have a well-written and complete job description as part of the position posting. If you are not starting from a sufficiently detailed job description, consider reaching out to the employer to request one. Many of us are guilty of allowing months or even years lapse between resume updates. As a result, I often see candidates leave out recent training, coursework, and projects that could make their candidacy stronger. You may find that flipping through your calendar is a good way to capture all continuing professional educational classes, seminars and conferences that have advanced your technical skills. If you have presented a technical update at a recent professional event, include that as well. Sometimes, intense client and personal commitments can keep professionals from investing time in personal development. If you find that you are missing key industry knowledge, use this opportunity to catch up. #2: Do the skills paint a picture that is uniquely mine? A complaint that I hear frequently from job seekers is that their resume skills section is too generic. Anyone from my industry could list those same skills, they remark. What good is a skills list if it does not help me stand out? That is a fair point. If you are concerned that your listed skills are identical to those of your peers, dig deeper to find a take that is uniquely yours. Perhaps you have worked or volunteered in another industry or country an experience that equipped you with a perspective and a set of insights that aren't common. Sometimes, cross-functional experiences can allow you to present the same skills in a different light. You might find that soft skills, in particular, can help you round out the presentation. For example, while most candidates for an accounting manager position have familiarity with the same set of technical guidelines and rules, you may bring in a unique experience because you have helped a company comply with a new regulation in record time. The specific list will vary by industry, but you will have a good starting point if you can highlight the top five skills that trend across several similar position descriptions. Be sure that you have covered both hard and soft skills for a well-rounded presentation. Resume hard and soft skills: An art and a science. While there are best practices and common industry approaches to maximizing your resume skills section, getting the language just right requires a mix of art and science. I recommend that you experiment with different combinations and formats to see if certain words and organizational methods prove more effective than others.
